**Mumbai, India** – Renowned fashion designer Anita Dongre has partnered with Mattel to create a special Diwali-themed Barbie doll, marking the first time the iconic toy has donned a festive Indian outfit.
The limited-edition Barbie sports a stunning navy blue “Moonlight Bloom” lehenga set with a contemporary twist. The ensemble features a sleeveless Rajasthan-inspired coatee, a pichwai embroidered blouse, and a skirt adorned with lotus, dahlia, and jasmine motifs, symbolizing nature’s beauty. Geometric patterns at the hem add a unique touch.
“Designing for a doll is quite different from designing for a real person,” said Dongre, speaking to Vogue. “The process feels more intimate. The most exciting part was seeing the design come to life in doll form.”
Instead of the classic pink, Dongre opted for a deep midnight blue, stating, “I wanted to bring something meaningful to the collaboration. The deep rich hues of midnight blue along with our signature Indian floral motifs felt like a natural choice.”
The Diwali Barbie, accessorized with golden jhumkas and matching stacked bangles, aims to represent the “fashion-forward modern Indian woman of today,” according to Dongre. She believes the doll “carries the modern sensibilities of Gen Z with her individuality, but she also has the grace and elegance that all generations appreciate.”
The limited-edition Diwali Barbie is sure to be a hit among collectors and fans of Indian fashion, injecting a dose of desi charm into the iconic doll’s world.
