**Thane:** Thane Congress President Vikrant Chavan has accused the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) of favoring a specific contractor in the construction of a new Municipal Corporation building. Chavan alleges that the TMC has prepared the terms and conditions for the project under pressure, despite the necessary land not being available and the process for reserving the space not being complete.
Chavan further alleges that the Municipal Commissioner ignored crucial instructions regarding the project, which necessitated completion before the tender process was initiated. This, he claims, is a deliberate attempt to expedite the tender process.
The TMC has also issued a notice to the developer, halting the construction of a proposed ‘Jalkumbh’ on the plot meant for the new building, despite the approved plan submitted to RERA. Notably, the same plot was earlier reserved for a park.
Chavan points out the contradiction between the TMC’s decision to build a park on the plot in 2022 and the current move to use it for the building. This change, he believes, points towards a deliberate attempt to favor the contractor.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about the funding for the ₹750 crore project. While the state government has allocated ₹250 crore, the source of the remaining ₹500 crore remains unclear.
Chavan has demanded an independent inquiry into the entire matter and requested the suspension of the land transfer, reservation change, and tender processes until the inquiry is complete. He has also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to postpone the groundbreaking ceremony until the concerns of the Thane citizens are addressed.
The Congress party has been vocal in its opposition to the change in reservation of the plot, urging for a transparent and fair process.
