**Goma, Congo (October 3, 2023)** – A ferry carrying hundreds of passengers capsized in Lake Kivu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on Thursday, resulting in at least 78 deaths, a local official confirmed.
Governor Jean-Jacques Mupusi of South Kivu province stated that the ferry was carrying 278 people. He added that at least 78 people perished, and the death toll may rise.
Eyewitnesses reported that the ferry was overloaded with passengers. The vessel sank just meters from the port of Kituku. The ferry was en route from Minova in South Kivu province to Goma in North Kivu province when the accident occurred.
This tragic incident follows a series of similar ferry accidents in the country. In June, a ferry capsized near the capital Kinshasa, claiming the lives of 80 passengers. In January, another ferry accident in Lake Mai-Ndombe resulted in 22 deaths.
