Wed Oct 02 23:37:54 UTC 2024: ## Inter Miami Eyeing MLS Cup Despite Supporters’ Shield Chase
Inter Miami, led by Lionel Messi and a star-studded roster, are on the cusp of clinching the MLS Supporters’ Shield with a win over the Columbus Crew on Wednesday. A victory would also see them on track to break the regular-season points record, but for Jordi Alba and the team, the ultimate prize remains the MLS Cup.
“Winning the Supporters’ Shield would be a nice achievement, but in the end, what we want to win is the MLS Cup,” said Alba, the former Barcelona full-back.
Despite a recent run of three straight draws, Miami coach Gerardo Martino remains proud of his team’s accomplishments. “When a team like Inter has 65 points and has lost only four matches all season, we should recognise all the good things we have accomplished this season,” he stated.
Messi, who scored against Charlotte FC last time out, has not directly contributed to a goal in his last three away appearances. However, Miami will be hoping their star man can break this drought against the reigning MLS Cup champions.
Columbus, on the other hand, are in good form and have lost only two of their last 40 home matches. They have also won three of their four home matches against Inter Miami.
Opta’s predictive model favors Columbus, but Miami are aiming to continue their remarkable journey towards a potential MLS Cup triumph. “It’s a great opportunity for us,” said midfielder Matias Rojas. “We’re taking it step by step… on Wednesday, we will go to win and achieve that goal.”
