**Dakar, Senegal** – Senegal has parted ways with their coach, Aliou Cisse, who led the team to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations title in 2022 and two consecutive World Cup appearances. The decision, announced by the Senegalese Football Association, came at the request of the government and was initiated by Sports Minister Khady Diene Gaye.
Cisse, a former national team captain and Paris Saint-Germain player, took charge of the Lions of Teranga in 2015. Under his guidance, Senegal not only secured their historic AFCON victory but also reached the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup. However, the team’s performance in the recent AFCON, where they were eliminated by eventual champions Ivory Coast in the Round of 16, seems to have been a contributing factor to this decision.
An interim coaching team will take over for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi this month. Senegal currently sit level on points with Burkina Faso in their qualifying group, and are also unbeaten in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Cisse’s departure marks the end of an era for Senegalese football, as he leaves behind a legacy of success and a renewed sense of optimism for the nation’s football future.
