Wed Oct 02 17:21:34 UTC 2024: ## Samsung India Workers Continue Strike, Fast for Wage Revision and Recognition
**Chennai, India -** Workers at Samsung India Electronics Ltd. entered their fourth week of strike on Wednesday, observing a token fast near the factory. The protest, led by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), demands wage revision, improved working conditions, and recognition of the Samsung India Workers Union.
The CITU alleges that Samsung has hired temporary workers to replace striking employees, raising concerns about worker safety and training. They will file a complaint with the Director of Factories in the coming days.
While several rounds of talks between the company, workers, and labor department officials have failed, another tripartite meeting is scheduled for next week.
“We are observing a token fast today. Our most important demand is to recognize the Samsung India Workers Union by the labor department at the earliest,” a CITU source told PTI.
The strike, which began on September 9th, has affected production of consumer durables like air conditioners, refrigerators, and televisions at the plant. However, Samsung has maintained that the impact on operations is minimal and has reiterated their commitment to addressing worker grievances.
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has written to the Tamil Nadu government urging a swift and amicable resolution to the issue. Meanwhile, the CITU staged protests across districts on Tuesday in support of the Samsung workers.
This ongoing strike highlights a growing concern regarding worker rights and fair labor practices in India. As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see whether the upcoming tripartite meeting will bring a resolution to the demands of the Samsung India workers.
