Wed Oct 02 16:22:26 UTC 2024: ## Javier Bardem Breaks Silence on Gaza Conflict, Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

**San Sebastian, Spain** – Acclaimed Spanish actor Javier Bardem has broken his silence on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, delivering a powerful call for peace while accepting an award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Bardem condemned the Hamas attacks, but also spoke out against the “massive punishment that the Palestinian population is enduring.” He urged an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages by Hamas, and the prosecution of both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders responsible for the Oct. 7 attacks before the International Criminal Court.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Bardem elaborated on his decision to speak out. “I believe that we can and must help bring peace,” he said, emphasizing that “the security and prosperity of Israel and the health and future of a free Palestine will only be possible through a culture of peace, coexistence, and respect.”

His remarks come as the conflict has sparked deep divisions in Hollywood, with public support for either side often met with accusations of antisemitism or Islamophobia. Bardem acknowledged these concerns, stressing that while antisemitism and Islamophobia are serious issues, they shouldn’t be used to silence legitimate criticism of both the Israeli government and Hamas.

“We’re witnessing crimes against human rights, crimes under international law, such as the banning of food, water, medicines, electricity, and the trauma being created for generations,” he stated. “We cannot remain indifferent to that.”

Bardem has a long history of advocating for global issues, including peace during the 2014 Gaza conflict and refugee rights in Western Sahara. He highlighted the personal impact of the conflict on his own life, sharing the story of two close friends, one Israeli and one Palestinian, who both lost daughters to violence and are now working together for peace.

The actor concluded his message with a powerful plea for action: “What happened to us is like nuclear energy. You can use it for more destruction. Or you can use it to bring light… We want to exist. So we use this pain to support change. To build bridges, not to dig graves.”

Bardem’s powerful statement is sure to ignite further conversation about the conflict, particularly in Hollywood where the issue has become increasingly divisive. He hopes that his voice will contribute to a path toward a lasting peace.
