Wed Oct 02 10:37:21 UTC 2024: ## Zverev Confirms Shanghai Participation Despite Lingering Lung Issue

**SHANGHAI, CHINA -** German tennis star Alexander Zverev has confirmed his participation in the ATP Shanghai tournament despite suffering from a persistent lung issue. The world number 3, who recently withdrew from the Beijing Open due to the ailment, revealed in a pre-tournament press conference that he has been battling lung inflammation for the past few months.

Zverev explained, “I have had a small lung problem. I have inflammation in the lung again, which will take a few months, two or three, to completely disappear.” He attributes the issue to contracting pneumonia during and after the Laver Cup, leading to a high fever and ultimately hospitalization.

Despite the ongoing health concerns, Zverev remains optimistic about his chances in Shanghai, stating, “The doctor told me that playing won’t delay my recovery or make it worse, so I’m happy to give 100% of what I have.”

Zverev’s participation comes at a crucial juncture in his season, as he aims to finish the year as the world number 2. He acknowledged that his season has been marked by inconsistency but highlighted his strong performances on clay and grass, culminating in victories in Rome and a Roland Garros final appearance.

However, Zverev also admitted to a drop in form after the Olympics, attributing it to lingering physical issues. He expressed relief at finally understanding the cause of his persistent coughing and vowed to regain top form.

Zverev’s return to the Shanghai court, where he was a finalist in 2019, promises to be an interesting one. He faces a unique challenge due to the slower court surface and the new Wilson balls, which he described as feeling “dead” and “challenging.” He is determined to adjust to these changes and deliver his best performance in Shanghai.
