Wed Oct 02 01:56:09 UTC 2024: ## Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk Detained Amidst Peaceful Protest for Autonomy
Ladakh-based activist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, along with over 100 protestors, was detained by Delhi police on Monday night. The group was on a peaceful march to Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, demanding greater autonomy for Ladakh.
The march, which began in September, aimed to raise concerns about Ladakh’s administrative structure and its impact on the region’s economy and environment. Wangchuk, a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, has been a vocal advocate for Ladakh’s autonomy, calling for the implementation of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would grant greater self-governance to the region.
The protest comes amidst growing concerns about the lack of progress on Ladakh’s demands for autonomy, which were made after the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was revoked in 2019. Wangchuk and other protestors claim that the region has lost significant powers and faced job shortages since being delinked from the J&K administrative structure.
The group’s four-point agenda included:
* Granting Ladakh statehood
* Extending the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh
* Establishing a public service commission for Ladakh
* Creating separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts
The detention of the protestors has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who have condemned the action as a violation of peaceful assembly rights.
The march from Delhi to Ladakh was also intended to highlight environmental concerns, specifically the loss of grazing pastures for Pashmina goats in the Leh region due to industrial development and Chinese activity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Wangchuk’s detention has sparked further debate about the future of Ladakh and its autonomy within India. The government is yet to respond to the protestors’ demands, raising questions about the future of Ladakh’s development and governance.
