Kanpur, India – The Indian cricket team adopted a highly aggressive batting strategy on Day 4 of the second Test against Bangladesh, aiming for a quick win despite the match being delayed by rain for over two days. Led by captain Rohit Sharma, India piled on 285/9 in just 34.4 overs, scoring at a blistering rate of 8.22 runs per over. This aggressive approach, which saw the team declare their innings and dismiss two Bangladesh batsmen, was a calculated move to secure a result in the Test.
Bowling coach Morne Morkel revealed that the strategy was a joint decision between head coach Gautam Gambhir and the team, with Gambhir pushing for a rapid turnaround. “Even from GG’s (Gautam Gambhir) point of view, we decided to take the game forward as fast as possible,” said Morkel. “And you need a leader from the front to do that. And Rohit has done it so many times, and again today.”
Morkel praised Rohit’s leadership and his willingness to take risks from the outset. “To go to the first ball, bang six on a surface where the bounce might be up and down, or you may not be sure how the new ball is going to play,” he said. “You can also slightly go on the back foot as a bowling unit. So it was great to see the captain, leading from the front, putting in the charge.”
Morkel, who joined the Indian team’s coaching staff after Gambhir’s appointment, also expressed his admiration for the team’s professionalism and dedication. “For me, it’s so far, so enjoyable to see how professional they are and how they go about their daily life to put on a performance,” he said. “When it comes to recovery, it’s right up there. When it comes to gym work, fitness work, they honestly leave no stone unturned.”
