Tue Oct 01 18:37:42 UTC 2024: ## South Korea Vows ‘Overwhelming’ Response to North Korean Nuclear Threat

**Seoul, South Korea:** South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has issued a stark warning to North Korea, promising a “resolute and overwhelming” retaliation from the South Korea-US alliance if Pyongyang attempts to use nuclear weapons. Speaking at the 76th Armed Forces Day ceremony on Tuesday, Yoon declared that any such attack would result in the “end of the North Korean regime.”

The president’s strong stance comes after North Korea displayed images of its uranium enrichment facility and centrifuges used for producing nuclear fuel last month, actions that violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions. Recent missile launches by North Korea further escalated tensions.

Yoon urged North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to abandon the “delusion” that nuclear weapons guarantee security, emphasizing South Korea’s commitment to building a powerful military and strengthening its alliance with the US. He also highlighted the importance of trilateral cooperation involving Japan.

The ceremony showcased a range of South Korean military equipment, including Hyunmoo surface-to-surface missiles, the L-SAM system, and K9 self-propelled howitzers. Notably, the ceremony also launched the “Strategic Command,” a new military unit tasked with integrating advanced conventional capabilities and the extended deterrence of the US to deter North Korean nuclear and missile threats.

The US and South Korea have been working to strengthen their military alliance, with the establishment of the Nuclear Consultative Group aimed at enhancing deterrence against North Korean aggression.
