**Whitby, UK -** LGBTQ+ activist and trailblazer Lisa Power MBE, known as the “matriarch of LGBTQIA+ activism,” has been recognized as one of the National Lottery’s 30 “Game Changers” in celebration of the organization’s 30th anniversary. Power, alongside six other individuals who have made significant contributions to UK heritage and conservation, was honored with an art installation at Whitby Abbey, created by artist David Popa.
Power, appointed MBE in 2011, has dedicated her life to LGBTQ+ activism, working tirelessly to advance equality and preserve queer history. She volunteered at Switchboard during the HIV epidemic in the 1980s, co-founded Stonewall, served as policy director for the Terrence Higgins Trust, and was the first openly LGBTQ+ person to speak at the United Nations. Her passion for heritage is evident in her work on the lottery-funded “Icons and Allies” project, which uncovered hidden LGBTQ+ figures and allies across Wales.
“It helps to have other people that you know of, that you’ve heard of,” Power said regarding the importance of showcasing LGBTQ+ figures. “It helps to have some people who show that you can be anything and do anything.”
Power’s legacy inspires younger generations to get involved in LGBTQ+ history and heritage, ensuring that the fight for equality continues.
The National Lottery’s “Game Changers” initiative celebrates individuals across various fields who have significantly impacted the UK over the past 30 years. The celebration highlights the power of lottery funding in supporting these projects and fostering positive change.
“Our heritage is incredibly diverse, from archaeology under our feet to the historic parks and buildings we love, from precious memories and collections to sweeping landscapes and rare wildlife,” said Eilish McGuinness, CEO of The National Lottery Heritage Fund. “At the root of each part of our heritage are people…people who are game changers for heritage.”
The National Lottery has awarded over £8.6 billion to support thousands of projects across the UK, including those championed by the “Game Changers.” The organization’s commitment to preserving heritage and supporting vital causes, such as LGBTQ+ equality, continues to make a positive impact on the lives of many.
