Wed Oct 02 12:58:30 UTC 2024: ## Erdoğan Warns of Israeli Attack on Türkiye, Calls for New Constitution

**Ankara, Türkiye** – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has issued a stern warning to Israel, claiming that the ongoing military operations in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories could soon target Türkiye.

During his speech reopening parliament on October 1st, Erdoğan accused Israel of “terrorist attacks” in Lebanon and of attempting to provoke regional countries into conflict. He declared that Israel’s actions are a prelude to an attack on Türkiye, stating that “after Lebanon, the next place [Israel] will set its eyes on, I tell you clearly, will be our homeland.”

Erdoğan further claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “dreams” of conquering Anatolia, the historical heartland of Türkiye. Despite the potential threat, Erdoğan vowed to continue opposing Israel, stating that “Türkiye will do its best to establish a humanity front.”

Erdoğan also criticized those advocating for Turkish neutrality in the escalating tensions, emphasizing that “no one with an iota of conscience can remain silent in the face of such a massacre network.” He likened Netanyahu’s actions to those of Adolf Hitler and expressed confidence that the international community will stand against Israel’s aggression.

Beyond the international conflict, Erdoğan renewed his call for a new constitution, criticizing the current one as outdated and a remnant of the 1980 military coup. He highlighted the need for a “democratic, participatory, inclusive, libertarian and based on the separation of powers” constitution.

While the ruling party lacks the necessary majority to implement this proposal, Erdoğan invited all parties and segments of society to collaborate on drafting a new constitution. He emphasized the need for a “reconciliatory, libertarian” constitution that unites the Turkish people.

The escalating tensions between Israel and Türkiye come amidst ongoing violence in Lebanon and Gaza. Iran, which has supported Hamas in Gaza, warned of a retaliatory attack if Israel targets its territory.

Meanwhile, Türkiye’s tourism sector continues to flourish, with Antalya, a popular Mediterranean destination, recording a record 14 million tourists in the first nine months of 2024.
