**New York, NY -** CNN is implementing a paywall for its website, asking some users to pay $3.99 per month for unlimited access to its content. This move comes after the company’s streaming service, CNN+, failed to gain traction and was shut down earlier this year.
The paywall will target frequent visitors who consume a significant amount of content, with casual readers remaining unaffected. Subscribers will enjoy benefits beyond unlimited access, including exclusive content, documentaries, a curated daily selection of top journalism, and reduced advertising.
CNN’s decision to introduce a paywall is aimed at generating revenue to support its global journalism efforts. Alex MacCallum, executive vice president of digital products and services at CNN, stated in an internal memo: “We are asking users in the United States to pay a small recurring fee for unlimited access to CNN.com’s world-class articles.”
While some content will remain free, including breaking news and sponsored articles, the paywall signals a shift in the news organization’s approach to monetizing its digital content.
This move comes on the heels of Thomson Reuters, the world’s largest multimedia news provider, also announcing a paywall for its website and app starting in early October. The paywall will be available worldwide for $1 per week, with the aim of expanding coverage and investing in subscriber-focused products.
