CNN is taking a new approach to monetizing its digital content, launching a subscription model for CNN.com. Starting Tuesday, users will be offered a paywall, prompting them to consider subscribing for $3.99 per month or $29.99 per year. This move comes after the company’s failed CNN+ streaming venture in 2022.
CNN executives hope to attract heavy users with exclusive content including flash documentaries, interactive features, and access to more video content featuring recognizable anchors and correspondents. The company aims to diversify its digital offering beyond text articles, exploring lifestyle content and expanding its video offerings.
“The hope is that these are our first, very early steps to building a direct-to-consumer business,” said Alex MacCallum, executive vice president of digital products and services for CNN Worldwide. “We want this to be a very robust business line that complements the affiliate revenue we have and our advertising revenue.”
While CNN.com subscribers will see fewer ads and gain access to exclusive content, they will not have access to live programming from the company’s linear cable network. However, subscribers to the cable network can sign in to CNN.com to watch live programs.
CNN acknowledges that building a substantial subscription base will take time, estimating it will take a couple of years. The company plans to learn from its experiences and adjust its approach as it goes. This move positions CNN among other news organizations like CBS News, NBC News, ABC News, and Fox News, who have already established streaming offerings and subscription-based platforms.
Despite the challenges, CNN is confident that its new subscription model will be successful, allowing the company to diversify its revenue streams and capitalize on the growing demand for digital content.
