Wed Oct 02 11:57:53 UTC 2024: ## South Africa Avoids Whitewash with Convincing Win Over Afghanistan

**Sharjah, UAE -** South Africa salvaged some pride in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan, securing a comfortable seven-wicket victory at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Despite losing the series 2-0, the Proteas delivered a dominant performance to avoid a whitewash.

Afghanistan, batting first, struggled to build momentum, posting a modest total of 169 runs. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the lone bright spot, scoring a rapid 89 runs, but received little support from his teammates. South Africa’s bowling attack, led by Lungi Ngidi (2 wickets), Nqabayomzi Peter (2 wickets), and Andile Phehlukwayo (2 wickets), effectively restricted the Afghan batters.

In reply, South Africa chased down the target with ease, reaching the 170-run mark in just 34 overs with three wickets in hand. Aiden Markram (69 not out) played a crucial role, anchoring the chase with a composed innings, while Tristan Stubbs (26 not out) provided valuable support.

The victory highlighted South Africa’s improved performance, particularly their bowling unit which restricted Afghanistan to a below-par total. While Afghanistan’s batsmen failed to capitalize on Gurbaz’s early brilliance, South Africa showed their resilience and determination to secure a consolation win.
