Tue Oct 01 01:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Fondation Louis Vuitton to Host “Pop Forever, Tom Wesselman &…” Exhibition for its 10th Anniversary
**Paris, France** – The Fondation Louis Vuitton is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special exhibition titled “Pop Forever, Tom Wesselman &…” running from October 16, 2024 to February 24, 2025. This exhibition will delve into the influential Pop Art movement of the 1960s, which continues to inspire generations worldwide.
The exhibition will feature over 150 works by Tom Wesselman (1931-2004), a key figure in the Pop Art movement. Visitors will be able to trace his career through paintings and sculptures, as well as works made from various materials. Additionally, 70 works by 35 other artists, spanning from the Dadaist roots of Pop Art in the 1920s to contemporary works, will be on display. These artists share a common sensibility with Wesselman, highlighting the lasting impact of Pop Art across generations and nationalities.
The exhibition, curated by Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer, goes beyond a simple retrospective. “Pop Forever, Tom Wesselman &…” aims to contextualize Wesselman’s work within art history, offering a compelling perspective on Pop Art from the past, present, and future.
The exhibition explores the origins and evolution of Pop Art, from its rise in North America and Europe in the late 1950s, drawing inspiration from everyday life, including comics, advertising, movies, celebrities, consumer goods, and tabloids. The exhibition highlights the interconnectivity between art and popular culture, and the blurred lines between museums, galleries, and cultural industries.
The exhibition will span all four floors of the Fondation, chronologically showcasing Wesselman’s work and its connections to the broader world of Pop Art. Wesselman’s “Great American Nudes” will be presented alongside works by contemporary American artists such as Evelyn Axell, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Marisol, Marjorie Strider, and Andy Warhol. The exhibition also explores the influence of Dadaism (Marcel Duchamp, Kurt Schwitters) on Wesselman’s large-scale collages, and the foreshadowing of globalization-era consumerist imagery in his works through the works of Jeff Koons and Ai Weiwei.
“Pop Forever, Tom Wesselman &…” promises to be a unique and insightful exhibition, beyond a mere retrospective. It will showcase the enduring legacy of Pop Art, while exploring the contemporary relevance of its themes and aesthetics.
