Tue Oct 01 05:25:32 UTC 2024: ## IPL Cracks Down on Overseas Players: New Rules Aim to Prevent Auction Mischief
**Mumbai, India -** The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has announced new rules aimed at curbing overseas players’ potential misuse of the auction system. The move, implemented in a bid to ensure fairness and commitment from overseas players, comes as a response to recent issues involving last-minute withdrawals and a preference for mini-auctions over the more impactful mega-auctions.
The most significant change will see a cap placed on overseas player salaries during mini-auctions. No overseas player can earn more than the highest retained or sold player in the preceding mega-auction, whichever is lower. This move, explained by IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal, is designed to encourage greater participation of overseas stars in mega-auctions.
“The idea is to make the maximum number of players available at the bigger auction because that is when the franchises can plan a team for three years in advance,” said Dhumal.
Further deterring opportunistic behavior, the BCCI has introduced a potential 2-year suspension for overseas players who withdraw from participation after being sold in a mega-auction. This measure, aimed at preventing players from strategically manipulating the auctions for higher earnings, seeks to ensure that teams aren’t left scrambling for replacements at the last minute.
“We wanted to make sure that those who are making themselves available for a big auction are not at the receiving end,” said Dhumal. “It is not because they are part of the auction, they get picked up for an amount and then they refuse to play.”
The new rules emphasize the IPL’s commitment to fair play and the importance of players’ full commitment to the tournament. With these changes, the IPL hopes to create a more transparent and reliable system for both franchises and players.
