Tue Oct 01 02:05:59 UTC 2024: ## 2024: A Year of Eclipses, With ‘Ring of Fire’ Finale
The year 2024 was a spectacle for skywatchers with a total of four eclipses: two lunar and two solar. While the first two eclipses of the year, a penumbral lunar eclipse on March 25 and a total solar eclipse on April 8, were visible in parts of North and South America, the latter half of the year saw more widespread visibility.
A partial lunar eclipse graced the skies on September 18, visible from North and South America, Europe, and Africa. However, the highlight of the year was the annular solar eclipse on October 2, known as the “Ring of Fire”.
This dramatic eclipse, where the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but appears smaller due to its distance from Earth, created a striking ring of sunlight around the darkened centre. While visible mainly from southern Chile and Argentina, the eclipse also offered partial visibility in parts of South America, Antarctica, and the Pacific Ocean. The event lasted approximately three hours, with the maximum duration of the ring lasting up to 7 minutes and 25 seconds.
Unfortunately, skywatchers in India missed out on this spectacular event as it occurred during their nighttime hours.
**Safety First:**
Those lucky enough to witness this celestial phenomenon were urged to take proper safety precautions, such as wearing certified solar viewing glasses, to protect their eyes from potential damage.
**Looking Ahead to 2025:**
The year 2025 promises more celestial delights, with another set of four eclipses, including two total lunar eclipses and two partial solar eclipses. The first total lunar eclipse, on March 14, will be visible across the Americas, western Europe, and western Africa, while the second total lunar eclipse on September 7-8 will be observable in Asia, Australia, and eastern Africa.
Additionally, two partial solar eclipses will occur on March 29 and September 21, visible from different parts of the world. However, none of these eclipses will be visible from India.
As the world prepares for these upcoming celestial events, remember to always prioritize safety and enjoy the wonders of the cosmos.
