Ryan Murphy, the creator of the Netflix series “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” has brushed aside criticism from the Menendez brothers and their family, stating he has no interest in speaking to them. The miniseries, released on September 19th, has been met with accusations of inaccuracies and sensationalism, with the brothers themselves condemning the portrayal of their story.
Despite the controversy, Murphy maintains that the series provides a valid perspective on the case and believes it could ultimately benefit the brothers. He told Variety, “I believe that Monsters is the best thing that has happened to the Menendez brothers in 30 years” due to the show’s wide reach and potential for bringing their case back to the public eye. However, he clarifies that he will not be advocating for a new trial, stating, “I believe in justice, but I don’t believe in being a part of that machine. That’s not my job.”
While acknowledging the importance of prison reform, Murphy remains adamant in his artistic interpretation of the Menendez brothers’ story. He insists on the authenticity of his perspective and sees no value in further dialogue with the brothers, despite the fact that one of the actors, Cooper Koch, did reach out to Erik Menendez prior to the series.
“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” continues to generate discussion and controversy, raising important questions about the ethics of true-crime storytelling and its impact on those involved.
