KLUANG: Barisan Nasional candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah has secured a resounding victory in the Mahkota by-election, securing a 20,648-vote majority. Despite the low turnout among Chinese and Indian voters, estimated to be around 32% and 34% respectively, Syed Hussien has pledged to serve all constituents equally.
The overall voter turnout was recorded at 53.84%, a decline from the 57.34% turnout in the 2022 state elections. The low turnout is attributed to several factors, including the high population of young people working outside the constituency, particularly in Singapore and the Klang Valley.
Political analysts suggest that a public spat over halal certification between Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan leaders may have discouraged potential Pakatan supporters. The clash between DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok and Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh over mandatory halal certs for certain restaurants caused concern among DAP supporters about backing Barisan.
While the low turnout among Chinese voters was a concern, MCA played a significant role in mobilising support for Barisan, organising a national campaign led by party president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong. MCA’s efforts included reaching out to outstation Chinese voters and successfully contacting nearly 40% of them through a call center.
Syed Hussien has vowed to focus on serving all constituents, regardless of their voting choices, highlighting his commitment to inclusivity and unity. He believes that those who did not vote had other commitments, emphasizing a positive outlook on the outcome.
