Tue Oct 01 18:21:17 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Star Shakib Al Hasan’s Farewell Uncertain Amidst Political Turmoil

**Kanpur, India** – Legendary Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s future in Test cricket remains unclear after his last overseas Test appearance ended with a bittersweet farewell in Kanpur on Tuesday. While India’s Virat Kohli gifted him his bat after India’s series sweep, the uncertainty surrounding Shakib’s political situation back home casts a shadow on his potential return.

Shakib, who is facing a murder charge in Bangladesh stemming from the recent civil unrest, has declared he will not play the upcoming home series against South Africa unless the interim government guarantees his safe passage.

Despite the uncertainty, Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusinghe maintains that Shakib is expected to play the first Test against South Africa. However, Bangladesh media, who bid farewell to the star player, believe this may be his final red-ball match.

The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) had initially considered honoring Shakib, but ultimately decided against it due to lack of official confirmation from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

While Shakib’s decision to retire came as a surprise to Hathurusinghe, teammate Mehidy Hasan Miraz revealed that the all-rounder had informed the team about his plans earlier.

The BCB has expressed their inability to ensure Shakib’s safety, citing a lack of power to guarantee his security from public anger due to his political affiliations.

Shakib’s future in Test cricket remains in limbo, entangled in a complex web of politics and personal safety.
