Tue Oct 01 05:20:43 UTC 2024: ## Rohit Sharma Breaks World Record in Kanpur Test, Becomes First Opener to Hit Sixes Off First Two Balls

**Kanpur:** Indian captain Rohit Sharma etched his name in the history books during the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur. Although he scored a quickfire 23 runs off just 11 balls in India’s first innings, his innings saw him achieve a unique world record.

Sharma, known for his aggressive batting style, smashed two sixes off the first two balls he faced from Khaled Ahmed. This achievement makes him the fourth batter in the world to hit sixes off the first two deliveries of an innings.

Previously, this feat was accomplished by West Indies legend E.A.V. “Foffie” Williams in 1947/48 against England, Sachin Tendulkar in 2012/13 against Australia, and Umesh Yadav in 2019/20 against South Africa. However, Rohit Sharma is the first opener to achieve this remarkable feat.

He also became the only Indian captain to achieve this milestone in Test cricket. His blistering innings, which included one four and three sixes, delighted the fans.

Sharma’s innings also saw him register another record. He has now hit 41 sixes across all formats in 2023, making him the only captain in the world to achieve this feat three times in a calendar year. He previously achieved this in 2022 (45 sixes) and 2023 (80 sixes).

The match saw Bangladesh post a score of 233 in their first innings, before India declared their innings at 285/9, taking a 52-run lead. Bangladesh, needing to chase down a challenging target, were at 26/2 at the end of day four, still trailing by 26 runs.

The Indian bowlers will be looking to wrap up the Bangladesh innings early on day five to seal victory in the second Test. The match was hampered by rain interruptions in the first three days, giving the Indian batsmen the chance to unleash their power hitting on day four.
