**MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis.** – Drivers who frequently use I-894 can rejoice! After months of construction, all lanes of the interstate between the Hale and Mitchell interchanges will reopen on Monday morning, September 30th. The project, which included resurfacing and improvements, has transformed the once bumpy and pothole-ridden stretch into a smoother ride.
“It was pretty bumpy,” said Dallas Kinski, a resident who lives near the highway. “There were a lot of cracks and they did fillings on it, and yeah, you’d feel every bump going on the highway. Now it’s all blacktop and done, no more bumps, no debris flying up in the air, it’s nice.”
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has been working on the I-894 rehabilitation project for several months, resurfacing a three-mile stretch between 84th and 35th streets. The project also included improvements to a mile and a half of Loomis Road and ramps in Greenfield.
While the westbound lanes reopened last weekend, the eastbound lanes will officially re-open at 5:30 a.m. on Monday. The bridge and ramps are expected to reopen later this fall.
While the major portion of the project is complete, work will continue with overnight lane and ramp closures and full freeway closures for final paving. WisDOT plans to pause work during late fall and next spring, with the entire project expected to be finished by the summer of 2025.
