Sat Sep 28 17:18:20 UTC 2024: ## SpaceX Launches Reduced Crew to ISS, Bringing Home Starliner Astronauts

**CAPE CANAVERAL, FL – September 28, 2024** – A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched a two-man crew to the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday, carrying supplies and two empty seats for the Starliner astronauts set to return home in February. The launch, delayed two days due to Hurricane Helene, marked the first piloted flight from Space Force Station pad 40 for SpaceX.

The Crew Dragon Freedom, commanded by veteran NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, launched with a reduced crew due to an unexpected eight-and-a-half-month stay in orbit by Starliner astronauts Barry Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams. The duo, originally scheduled for a 10-day mission, are returning to Earth aboard the Crew 9 Dragon after multiple malfunctions with their spacecraft.

The launch was a unique operation, as Hague and Gorbunov will be joined by Wilmore and Williams aboard the ISS. Upon their arrival on Sunday, the four astronauts will replace the current Crew 8 members, who are returning to Earth on October 7th.

The mission is considered a “rescue” mission, as it allows the Starliner crew to safely return home. However, it presents unique challenges for both the incoming and returning crews, who had to adapt to a two-person flight and a less familiar spacecraft.

“We’re going to launch as a two-person crew, and then we’re going to land as a four-person crew,” said Hague. “One of the unique challenges of that is, how do we integrate the other two crew members into the Dragon operations when they’ve had very minimal Dragon training?”

Despite the challenges, the launch was hailed as a success, highlighting the adaptability of the SpaceX Crew Dragon and the cooperation between NASA, SpaceX, and Boeing in ensuring the safety of the astronauts.

The flight is also a testament to the ongoing advancement of human space exploration, with lessons learned from every mission contributing to future endeavors.
