Sat Sep 28 19:09:00 UTC 2024: ## Wolves’ Tactics Slammed as Gary Neville Criticizes “Defeatist” Approach

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has launched a scathing attack on Wolves’ tactics, accusing them of losing the essence of football during their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.

Neville was particularly critical of Wolves’ decision to repeatedly pass the ball back to goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in the closing stages of the match, despite needing a goal to equalize.

“They’ve passed it back to the goalkeeper,” Neville exclaimed on commentary. “It absolutely drives me crazy. You need a goal. Do they know? Stop it. Honestly, it’s so frustrating.”

Neville argued that this approach is becoming increasingly common amongst struggling teams and needs to stop. “I have no problem with them trying to play out from the back,” he said, “but there’s got to be some point in the game where you say, ‘Look, we’re struggling to have an impact on the game, we need a goal, we need to create some form of pressure, get the atmosphere in the ground going.'”

He pointed out that teams at the lower end of the table, desperate for a goal, are seemingly prioritizing possession over attacking intent. “It’s not just a criticism of Wolves, there’s plenty of teams doing it,” Neville emphasized. “It’s got to stop.”

Wolves manager Gary O’Neil acknowledged that his team was too patient in their approach, admitting that “we were a little bit too patient in that part of the game.” However, he defended his team’s efforts, stating that “everyone inside the changing room is giving everything and doing the best they can.”

The loss leaves Wolves rooted at the bottom of the Premier League table, facing a daunting next fixture against Manchester City at Molineux.

Neville’s criticism highlights a broader shift in football tactics, with managers seemingly prioritizing control and stability over risk-taking and attacking intent. This has led to accusations of a lack of excitement and entertainment in the game, particularly for fans who crave a more aggressive approach.
