Genoa’s head coach, Alberto Gilardino, has issued a stark warning to fans after their 3-0 defeat to Juventus, emphasizing the difficult fight ahead for the club to avoid relegation.
The loss was the latest in a series of disappointing results for Genoa, who have only secured one point from their last four Serie A matches. They were also eliminated from the Coppa Italia this week by rivals Sampdoria.
Gilardino admitted the team’s defensive fragility is a major concern, highlighting a costly error by defender De Winter in the second half that allowed Juventus to take control of the match. “We are fragile defensively at the moment and we know that when we concede, we open up even more,” he said.
The coach also lamented the lack of attacking options, especially with the departure of Albert Gudmundsson and the injury to Milan Badelj. He expressed hope that young midfielder Fabio Miretti can be deployed in a more attacking role to compensate for the absence of a creative midfielder.
“It is important to spend even more time in training working on the details, that is the only way forward,” said Gilardino, acknowledging the challenges facing the team. “A lot has happened, between injuries and players who have left.”
