**KOLKATA, INDIA** – Bollywood actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been awarded the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honor in cinema, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the industry.
The announcement was made by Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X (formerly Twitter), stating that Chakraborty will receive the award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024.
Chakraborty, known for his versatile performances across hundreds of Hindi and Bengali films, expressed his gratitude, dedicating the award to his family and fans. “I became speechless after getting such a prestigious award,” he said, adding, “I can’t cry, I can’t smile either. I am dedicating this award to my family and fans across the world.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X to congratulate Chakraborty, praising him as a “cultural icon, admired across generations.”
Leaders from both the BJP and ruling TMC in West Bengal also extended their congratulations to the veteran actor. BJP state president Sukanta Majumder lauded Chakraborty’s “unparalleled contribution to Indian cinema,” while TMC leader Kunal Ghosh jokingly reminded Chakraborty of a “Padma Shri” request made by late politician Pranab Mukhopadhyay.
Chakraborty, a three-time National Film Award winner for Best Actor, joins a distinguished list of West Bengali film personalities who have received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. Notably, the award was previously conferred upon legendary figures like Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, and Soumitra Chattopadhyay.
