Mon Sep 30 08:47:18 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh Protests Amit Shah’s Remarks on Bangladeshi Nationals
**Dhaka, September 24, 2024** – Bangladesh has lodged a strong protest with India over comments made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding Bangladeshi nationals during a recent visit to Jharkhand. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, in a statement released on Monday, described Mr. Shah’s remarks as “highly deplorable” and said they caused “deep sense of hurt” in Bangladesh.
The protest note was handed over to the Indian Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pawan Badhe. Bangladesh has called upon the Indian government to advise its political leaders to refrain from making such “objectionable and unacceptable remarks.”
Mr. Shah’s remarks were made during a speech in Sahibganj, Jharkhand on September 20, where he referred to the issue of influx into India from neighboring countries. He stated, “In Pakur district, slogans are being raised asking Hindus and Adivasis to leave Jharkhand. Tell me, does this land belong to Adivasis or Rohingya, Bangladeshi infiltrators?”
This incident follows several weeks of engagement between the Indian High Commission in Dhaka and stakeholders in the interim government of Bangladesh. Notably, Deputy High Commissioner Badhe accompanied High Commissioner Pranay Verma in a meeting with the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party last Sunday.
The latest protest highlights growing tension between the two neighboring countries over the issue of migration and national identity.
