Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has expressed unwavering confidence that his winger Vinicius Junior will claim the Ballon d’Or next month, citing his stellar Champions League performances.
Ahead of Sunday’s derby against Atletico Madrid, Ancelotti confirmed that injured star Kylian Mbappé will be sidelined for three weeks, missing the crucial encounter. While acknowledging the absence of the French forward, Ancelotti insists that the team’s tactical approach will remain largely unchanged.
“Without Mbappé, something changes, but not much. We can replace him well,” Ancelotti stated at a press conference. “With the same players, a 4-3-3 can become a 4-4-2. If we have three strikers, Vini or Rodrygo can play as wingers.”
The Italian manager has complete faith in Vinicius’s ability to deliver, believing the Brazilian’s “efficiency” in the Champions League, including his goals in the semi-finals and final, makes him a strong contender for the prestigious individual award. “If he doesn’t win, he will surely be among the top players,” Ancelotti added.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or shortlist has also included Serie A stars Lautaro Martinez, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Ademola Lookman. Ancelotti, alongside Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini, is also nominated for the Coach of the Year award.
