Sun Sep 29 00:07:07 UTC 2024: ## Sudanese Paramilitaries Kill 48 in Two Days of Attacks on El Fasher

**El Fasher, Sudan** – Two days of intense attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the Sudanese city of El Fasher have left at least 48 people dead, according to a medical source at El Fasher Teaching Hospital. The RSF, engaged in a power struggle with the Sudanese army, have been shelling the city, leading to civilian casualties and widespread fear.

The latest attack on Friday saw artillery fire kill 30 people and injure dozens, while Thursday’s assault on a market resulted in 18 deaths, some from shrapnel and others from burns. The medical source, requesting anonymity due to safety concerns for themselves and fellow healthcare workers, described the dire situation in the city.

El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, has been under siege by the RSF since May. The city has been the focus of international concern as the war between the RSF and the regular army continues to devastate Sudan. The conflict has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, with estimates ranging from 20,000 to 150,000.

The situation in El Fasher has prompted international calls for action. US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield urged a humanitarian pause in El Fasher and other besieged areas, while UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate ceasefire. US President Joe Biden also appealed for an end to the conflict, urging all countries to stop supplying weapons to the warring factions.

The RSF, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, is facing mounting pressure over its actions in Darfur. The region, home to over 10 million people, is currently facing famine and widespread displacement due to the ongoing conflict.

The international community is now calling for a swift end to the violence and the establishment of a humanitarian corridor to deliver desperately needed aid to the beleaguered city.
