**SHANGHAI, CHINA** – Reigning US Open champion and world number one Jannik Sinner faces a potential two-year ban from tennis after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed a previous ruling that cleared him of any wrongdoing. Sinner tested positive for a banned substance, clostebol, twice during a tournament in March, but an independent tribunal cleared him in August.
WADA, however, believes the independent tribunal’s decision was incorrect and has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), requesting a suspension of between one and two years.
Sinner’s positive tests came during the Indian Wells tournament. While he lost money and points from the tournament, he avoided a suspension at the time. The Italian tennis star claims the banned substance was a result of contamination from a massage given by his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, who treated a cut on Sinner’s hand without gloves. The spray used contained the banned substance, but is available over the counter in Italy.
Despite the appeal, Sinner has not yet been suspended. His legal team maintains his innocence, and several prominent players have spoken out in support of the Italian star, including Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Both expressed concerns about the inconsistencies and lack of clarity within the anti-doping system.
Sinner, who won the Australian Open earlier this year, currently remains eligible to compete, but the appeal has cast a shadow over his future. The outcome of the CAS review remains unknown, and it is unclear when a verdict will be reached.
The news comes as Sinner prepares for the Australian Open in January, where he will attempt to defend his title. The potential suspension threatens to derail his career, but his supporters remain hopeful that justice will prevail.
