**Beirut, Lebanon** – Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, the long-time head of the Iran-backed militia, was killed on Friday in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut. The Israeli military confirmed the strike, calling it a “targeted strike” on Hezbollah’s headquarters in the southern Beirut neighborhood of Dahiyeh.

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death in a statement, saying he “has joined his fellow martyrs.” The official Iranian news agency reported that an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander was also killed in the strike.

Nasrallah, born in 1960, was a prominent figure in the Middle East conflict for decades. He rose to lead Hezbollah after the assassination of its previous leader in 1992, and under his leadership, the group grew into one of the most powerful militias in the region.

Hezbollah, funded by Iran, trained Hamas troops and provided social services in Lebanon. Nasrallah is credited with leading his group to victory in 2000, pushing Israeli troops out of southern Lebanon after an 18-year occupation.

Nasrallah’s son, Hadi, was killed in fighting with the Israeli army in 1997, the same year the U.S. designated Hezbollah a terrorist organization. For fear of assassination attempts, Nasrallah rarely appeared in public, only making appearances on television.

Despite his controversial status, Nasrallah was admired by many in Lebanon and the wider region for his stance against Israeli and Western forces. He was seen as a symbol of resistance against foreign influence in the Middle East.

His death is expected to have significant repercussions for the region, with potential for heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon.
