**Beirut/Jerusalem** – In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing conflict, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claimed to have killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in a targeted airstrike on his headquarters in Beirut. The IDF also confirmed the death of Hezbollah’s southern front commander, Ali Karki, and other senior commanders in the strike.

The announcement, made on Saturday morning, followed overnight speculation about Nasrallah’s fate after Israel launched a series of strikes on the Dahieh area of Beirut. The IDF stated that the strike was carried out by F15I jets equipped with bunker-busting bombs and was based on “precise intelligence.”

While Hezbollah has yet to comment on the claim, residents in Beirut expressed shock and disbelief. The streets of the Lebanese capital emptied following the announcement, with many residents fleeing their homes.

The IDF, however, has already begun preparing for a potential escalation, mobilizing reserve soldiers and activating three battalions for deployment across Israel. The military also sent two brigades to northern Israel earlier this week for ground invasion training.

The news of Nasrallah’s alleged death has also raised concerns about Iran’s involvement in the conflict. Iran, Hezbollah’s principal backer, has so far remained cautious about directly engaging with Israel. However, the Iranian embassy in Beirut warned that the strike on Dahieh was a “dangerous game changing escalation” and vowed to punish those responsible.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a speech at the UN General Assembly, vowed to continue the fight in Lebanon, rejecting calls for a truce. Netanyahu also stated that Israel’s reach extends throughout the Middle East, including Iran.

This development comes as Israel has shifted its focus from Gaza to Lebanon, where heavy bombing has already claimed over 700 lives and displaced thousands. The Israeli military has asserted that the elimination of Nasrallah is not the end of their operations, implying that further strikes are planned.

The potential consequences of Nasrallah’s death remain unclear. Hezbollah’s future leadership, particularly the role of second-in-command Hashem Safieddine, is uncertain. The group’s response to Nasrallah’s alleged killing, and how it might affect the Lebanese state, are crucial questions facing the region.
