**Abu Dhabi:** South Africa secured an eight-wicket victory over Ireland in the first T20 of the series in Abu Dhabi on Friday. Ryan Rickelton’s career-best 75 and Reeza Hendricks’ 16th fifty propelled South Africa to a comfortable 178-2 in the 18th over, chasing down Ireland’s 171-8.
Rickelton, who previously held a highest score of 27 in six T20s, smashed his way to a maiden half-century off just 30 balls, including four sixes. Hendricks, reaching his fifty off 31 balls, and Rickelton formed a formidable partnership of 136, taking the pressure off the South African chase.
Ireland’s innings, which began with a promising start thanks to Ross Adair’s early boundaries, was ultimately hampered by a late collapse. After Curtis Campher’s impressive 49 off 36 balls, South Africa’s medium-pacer Patrick Kruger delivered a game-changing performance. Kruger, playing in his fifth T20, claimed a career-best 4-27, including a sensational three-wicket maiden in the final over, ending Ireland’s hopes of a competitive total.
The Irish team, currently touring the United Arab Emirates due to cost considerations, will look to bounce back in the second T20 on Sunday before the series shifts to One Day Internationals.
