Fri Sep 27 18:03:43 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis Breaks Records, Emerges as a Batting Superstar

**Colombo, Sri Lanka -** Kamindu Mendis, the 25-year-old Sri Lankan batsman, continues to break records and cement his status as a rising star in Test cricket. On Friday, he became the fastest batsman from the subcontinent to reach 1,000 runs in Test cricket, achieving the milestone in a remarkable 13 innings. This achievement surpasses the record held by former Indian batsman Vinod Kambli, who reached the milestone in 14 innings.

Mendis’s blistering form was evident in his mammoth innings of 182 runs against New Zealand in the 2nd Test. He reached his century in style, leading Sri Lanka to a colossal first-innings total of 602/5 declared, a rare feat in modern Test cricket. His innings was the third century of the Sri Lankan innings, alongside Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis.

Mendis’s recent performances have been nothing short of phenomenal. He has scored five centuries in his last eight Test matches, including scores of 102, 164, 92, 113, and 74. He currently holds the highest average and most centuries among Test batsmen in 2024, surpassing the likes of Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Shubman Gill, and Kane Williamson.

His emergence has caught the attention of Sri Lankan legends like Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga. Malinga described Mendis as “already on his way to greatness,” while Sangakkara simply stated, “Kamindu Mendis – Becoming of greatness.”

Mendis’s arrival is a much-needed boost for Sri Lankan cricket. The team has been searching for a successor to the great Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene since their retirements. While Chandimal, Angelo Mathews, Kusal Mendis, and Dimuth Karunaratne have shown potential, none have consistently lived up to the expectations of a batting superstar.

With Mendis’s impressive form and record-breaking achievements, Sri Lanka’s search for their next batting star may finally be over. He has the potential to become a truly dominant force in Test cricket and lead Sri Lanka to new heights in the years to come.
