Mon Sep 23 14:38:53 UTC 2024: ## Canadian Tennis Star Andreescu Champions Gender Equity in Sport

**Toronto, Canada** – Bianca Andreescu, Canadian tennis star and former US Open champion, is using her platform to advocate for gender equality in sports. She believes that her role extends beyond the tennis court, advocating for change both on and off the court.

Andreescu, along with Tennis Canada, is spearheading a new campaign highlighting the disparity in pay between male and female athletes. The campaign features a striking image of Andreescu seated in a purple umpire’s chair, a color associated with gender equity movements.

“It’s been more than 50 years since Billie Jean King paved the way for gender equality in tennis,” Andreescu says, “but there’s still work to be done. It’s not just about women and girls; it’s about creating equitable access for all.”

The campaign coincides with the National Bank Open, a tournament striving for pay equity between male and female athletes. By 2027, the women’s winner will earn the same prize money as the men’s champion, a significant step forward.

“The campaign aims to spark conversations and encourage people to think about the need for change,” explains Eva Havaris, a senior vice-president with Tennis Canada. “People are starting to recognize the importance of women’s sports, and we see that in the growing viewership and support for leagues like the WNBA and the Professional Women’s Hockey League.”

Andreescu emphasizes the importance of women athletes connecting and supporting each other, drawing parallels between her experiences and those of other female athletes like Canadian hockey legend Marie-Philip Poulin.

“We can truly relate to each other’s experiences,” Andreescu says, highlighting the significance of sharing and learning from one another.

Andreescu’s active role in promoting gender equity reflects a growing movement across various sports, and her commitment is a powerful message for a new generation of athletes.
