The Film Federation of India (FFI) has selected Kiran Rao’s “Laapataa Ladies” as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards. The decision has sparked debate, with some expressing surprise that Payal Kapadia’s Cannes-winning “All We Imagine As Light” was overlooked.

“Laapataa Ladies,” produced by Aamir Khan Productions, tells the story of two newlywed brides who are mistakenly exchanged during a train journey. Director Kiran Rao expressed her gratitude for the selection, stating that it was a privilege to be chosen from amongst “amazing Indian films” that were also worthy contenders.

“All We Imagine As Light” has been garnering international acclaim, having been screened at prestigious festivals like San Sebastian, Toronto, and New York. Director Payal Kapadia expressed her desire to represent India at the Oscars, while actor Rana Daggubatti, who is distributing the film, highlighted its upcoming phased release across India.

The FFI’s 13-member jury, headed by filmmaker Jahnu Barua, considered a wide range of films, including “Kalki 2898 AD,” “Animal,” “Chandu Champion,” “Sam Bahadur,” “Aattam,” “Aadujeevitham,” “Maidaan,” “Joram,” and “Kottukaali.”

The selection of “Laapataa Ladies” has ignited discussion about the criteria used by the FFI. While some celebrate its nomination, others believe “All We Imagine As Light’s” international recognition made it a more deserving choice. The Oscar campaign will undoubtedly highlight the strengths of both films as they compete for international recognition.
