Tue Sep 24 06:32:28 UTC 2024: ## Badlapur Sexual Assault Accused Killed in Police Encounter Sparks Political Row
**Mumbai, September 24, 2024:** The encounter killing of Akshay Shinde, accused in the heinous Badlapur school sexual assault case, on Monday has ignited a political firestorm in Maharashtra. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) have hailed the encounter as a necessary action, the Opposition has expressed serious concerns and demanded a thorough investigation.
The encounter occurred on Monday when Shinde allegedly snatched a police officer’s service revolver and fired shots, leading to a retaliatory response from the police. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis justified the encounter, claiming that the accused had put the lives of the officers at risk.
However, the Opposition, led by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Congress, has accused the government of trying to cover up the real circumstances behind Shinde’s death. Sharad Pawar, NCP chief, expressed suspicions about the laxity shown by the Home Department in transferring the accused, calling for a deeper investigation into the matter.
The Congress demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Bombay High Court, alleging that the encounter could be an attempt to shield other accused in the case. They highlighted that the school trustees, who are also accused in the case, are still absconding.
The Opposition has also raised concerns about the potential loss of evidence with Shinde’s death, citing the similar encounter killing of an accused in the Hyderabad rape case.
The encounter has also sparked debate about the broader issue of police encounters in India, with concerns raised about the use of extrajudicial killings to circumvent the legal system. The death of Shinde has brought to the fore the complex questions surrounding justice, accountability, and the role of the police in a democracy.
