**Mumbai, September 24, 2024:** The encounter killing of Akshay Shinde, accused in the heinous Badlapur school sexual assault case, on Monday has ignited a political firestorm in Maharashtra. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) have hailed the encounter as a necessary action, the Opposition has expressed serious concerns and demanded a thorough investigation.
The encounter occurred on Monday when Shinde allegedly snatched a police officer’s service revolver and fired shots, leading to a retaliatory response from the police. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis justified the encounter, claiming that the accused had put the lives of the officers at risk.
