**Thane, Maharashtra:** Akshay Shinde, the accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case, died in a police encounter on Monday evening. Shinde was being transferred from Taloja jail to Badlapur to face charges related to a fresh FIR filed by his former wife.
According to police officials, Shinde, while being transported, managed to snatch the service revolver of API Nilesh More and fired three shots at the police party. One bullet hit More’s lap, while the other two were fired elsewhere. In self-defense, another police officer fired a single shot at Shinde, injuring him.
Both More and Shinde were rushed to Kalwa civic hospital, where Shinde was declared dead by doctors. More was referred to Jupiter hospital for further treatment. Shinde’s body has been sent to JJ Hospital in Mumbai for post-mortem.
Shinde was initially arrested on August 17 in connection with the sexual assault of two minor girls, with FIRs registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
A 15-member special investigation team was formed on September 13 to investigate the FIR filed by his former wife.
