New Delhi: Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Sunday that he will vacate the official CM residence at 6, Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines by the first week of October, coinciding with the beginning of Navratri. Kejriwal, who stepped down from his position on September 17, has resided at the official residence since 2015.
Addressing a public gathering at Jantar Mantar, Kejriwal highlighted that despite serving as CM for over a decade, he still doesn’t own a house in Delhi. He stated that he has not gained any material wealth during his tenure, only the love and blessings of the people.
“After Pitru Paksha ends, and as soon as the Navratras start, I will leave the CM residence and come to any of your houses and start living with you,” Kejriwal said, accepting offers from citizens to stay in their homes rent-free.
Responding to Kejriwal’s announcement, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor accused him of trying to “mislead” the people by portraying his departure as a sacrifice. Kapoor highlighted that previous CMs left their official bungalows without drama, suggesting Kejriwal’s actions are purely for public display.
A Public Works Department (PWD) official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that it is customary for a chief minister to vacate the official residence within two to three weeks of their resignation being accepted. The President accepted Kejriwal’s resignation on Friday, making his planned departure well within the established timeframe.
Earlier this week, the AAP demanded that Kejriwal be provided accommodation in central Delhi, citing his status as the convenor of a national party.
