Sun Sep 22 23:50:38 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Elects Controversial Nationalist Leader as New President

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and its coalition, the National People’s Power (NPP), has been elected as Sri Lanka’s new President. Dissanayake secured a decisive victory with almost 42% of the popular vote, defeating his nearest rival, Sajith Premadasa, who garnered only 23%. Incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe finished third with 16%.

Dissanayake’s victory marks a significant shift in Sri Lankan politics, as he embodies a hardline nationalist stance and has a history of opposing any form of power sharing with the Tamil minority.

His political career began with active involvement in student politics and participation in the JVP’s armed uprising against the government in the late 1980s. He rose through the ranks of the JVP, becoming a member of parliament in 2000.

Dissanayake’s political agenda is deeply rooted in Sinhala nationalism. He has consistently opposed any attempt at devolution of power to Tamils, including the 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution and the Indo-Lanka Accord of 1987. His party has also criticized the Tamil-origin estate workers from India, labeling them as “instruments of Indian expansionism,” and opposed any concessions to India, including the return of the Katchatheevu island.

Dissanayake’s JVP has also been a staunch supporter of the Sri Lankan military, endorsing their brutal campaign against the LTTE. The party has opposed international investigations into alleged war crimes committed by the Sri Lankan Army and has embraced military officers accused of such crimes.

With Sri Lanka facing an economic crisis and awaiting further financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Dissanayake has indicated his intention to “re-negotiate” the terms of the bailout agreement, a move that could further complicate the country’s economic recovery.

Dissanayake’s election raises concerns about the future of reconciliation and peace in Sri Lanka, as his nationalist stance could further alienate the Tamil community and potentially exacerbate ethnic tensions. His leadership also carries the risk of undermining Sri Lanka’s international relations and hindering its economic recovery.
