Colombo, Sri Lanka – Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has been elected the new President of Sri Lanka, securing 42.31% of the vote in Sunday’s election. The country’s Election Commission announced the results on its website.
Dissanayake, also known as AKD, will be sworn in on Monday, September 23. He narrowly defeated opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, with incumbent president Ranil Wickremesinghe finishing third.
AKD, a former Minister of Agriculture, rose to prominence in the JVP, a party with Marxist-Leninist roots. He has been praised for his clear-headed decision making and powerful oratory skills.
Many Sri Lankans see Dissanayake as a symbol of change and hope, placing their faith in him to overcome the nation’s recent economic challenges. At 55 years old, he now faces the task of fulfilling those aspirations and leading Sri Lanka into a new era.
