Mon Sep 23 08:11:55 UTC 2024: ## Sri Lanka Dominate New Zealand in Galle Test, Securing 63-Run Victory
**Galle, Sri Lanka -** Sri Lanka celebrated a resounding 63-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test at Galle International Stadium on Monday. The hosts’ spin attack proved too much for the visitors, with left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya claiming a match-winning nine wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings.
Chasing a target of 275, New Zealand were bowled out for 211 despite a valiant 92 from Rachin Ravindra. Jayasuriya, who has a remarkable record in Galle, proved to be a constant threat, taking 5-68 in the second innings and securing his eighth five-wicket haul, seven of which have come in this very venue.
“The win in England boosted our morale,” Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva said, referencing their recent Test victory at The Oval. “We’ve the ability to win Tests and the boys are delivering now.”
New Zealand, who began the final day needing only 68 runs to win with two wickets remaining, were quickly dismantled by the Sri Lankan bowlers. Jayasuriya ended Ravindra’s valiant knock in the second over of the day, and then bowled William O’Rourke in his next over to seal the victory for Sri Lanka.
“Tough place to come but a good test match throughout,” New Zealand captain Tim Southee said. “There’s plenty of positives for us to take away from it but obviously disappointing to come out on the wrong side.”
Jayasuriya, who was awarded the Player of the Match, was pleased with his performance. “I like this Galle pitch,” he said. “I just concentrate on bowling a consistent line and length, focus on that and get the results.”
The second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, also in Galle, begins on Thursday.
