**New York, USA:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on Sunday, expressing deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He reiterated India’s unwavering support for the restoration of peace and stability in the region, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict.
“Met President Mahmoud Abbas in New York. Reiterated India’s support for the early restoration of peace and stability in the region. Exchanged views of further strengthening long-standing friendship with the people of Palestine,” PM Modi stated on X (formerly Twitter).
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, further elaborated on the meeting, stating, “PM Modi expressed deep concern at the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reaffirmed India’s continued support to the people of Palestine.”
This meeting comes amidst a devastating conflict between Israel and Hamas, which has resulted in a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 95,000 injured since the conflict began in October.
India, long a vocal advocate for a peaceful resolution, has consistently called for a two-state solution achieved through dialogue and negotiations. This approach, New Delhi believes, will pave the way for enduring peace in the region.
PM Modi, currently on a three-day official visit to the US, addressed thousands of Indian-Americans at a community event in Long Island on Sunday, further showcasing India’s growing global influence. His meeting with President Abbas underscores India’s commitment to playing a constructive role in resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.
