**Mumbai, India** – Kiran Rao’s lighthearted satire “Laapataa Ladies” has been selected as India’s official entry for the Best International Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards. The announcement was made by the Film Federation of India (FFI) on Monday.

The film, which was chosen from a list of 29 contenders, including critically acclaimed titles like “Animal” and “Aattam,” tells the heartwarming tale of two brides who get accidentally swapped during a train journey in rural India.

The 13-member selection committee, headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, unanimously agreed on “Laapataa Ladies” due to its unique storytelling and empowering message. The film, produced by Aamir Khan and Rao’s Kindling Productions, has garnered universal praise from critics since its release in March.

Despite her previous statement that box office success would be the film’s greatest reward, Rao expressed her hopes for the film’s potential Oscar nomination. “My dream would be fulfilled if it would go (to Oscars),” she said.

“Laapataa Ladies” features a stellar cast, including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Ravi Kishan, Chhaya Kadam, and Geeta Aggarwal Sharma.

India’s previous Oscar entry, “2018: Everyone is a Hero,” was a Malayalam superhit. It remains to be seen if “Laapataa Ladies” will be able to secure a coveted nomination at the prestigious awards ceremony.
