**New Delhi:** Kiran Rao’s directorial venture ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards. The film emerged victorious after a fierce competition with other notable releases including Ranbir Kapoor’s ‘Animal’, Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Chandu Champion’, Prabhas’ ‘Kalki 2898 AD’, the National Award-winning Malayalam film ‘Aattam’, Rajkumar Rao’s ‘Shrikant’, and Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Sam Bahadur’.

Produced in collaboration with Aamir Khan, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ garnered attention for its unique narrative focusing on two newlywed brides and their journeys. The film, which features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Srivastava, and Ravi Kishan alongside the director, was released earlier this year.

Kiran Rao had expressed her desire to see ‘Laapataa Ladies’ representing India at the Oscars. “It would be a dream come true if the film gets selected for the Academy Awards,” she stated to PTI. “It’s a process and I hope ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is considered. I am sure a great film will be chosen,” added the director.

The filmmaker previously revealed that the story for the film was gifted by her ex-husband Aamir Khan. “Aamir came home and told me this one-liner, about two girls on a train and how they get exchanged. I knew it was not just a great story but also a great opportunity for me. Honestly, I could never have written a story like this. It’s not my kind of story naturally, but I felt I could bring something of my own to it,” she had shared in an interview.

Set against the backdrop of rural India in 2001, when mobile phones were a luxury, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ was filmed in a village in Madhya Pradesh. Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel play the roles of the wives in the film.
