Budapest, Hungary – India etched its name in chess history on Sunday, claiming gold in both the men’s and women’s events at the 45th Chess Olympiad. This marks the first time India has achieved this feat, with crucial wins from young stars D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi leading the way.
In the men’s final round, India faced off against Slovenia. Gukesh and Erigaisi secured early victories, putting India in a commanding position. Praggnanandhaa’s win, combined with a draw from Vidit, sealed the gold with a resounding 3.5-0.5 triumph.
Speaking to Chess24, Gukesh, the World Championship challenger, revealed the team’s unwavering focus on gold after narrowly missing out in Chennai two years ago. “This time, I thought no matter what, I am going to do whatever it takes to win this team gold for India,” he said, highlighting the team’s collective determination.
The interview also touched on the infamous Bermuda party, a legendary social event held during the Chess Olympiad. While some players opted for the party, Gukesh, Praggnanandhaa, and Harikrishna chose to stay focused. Erigaisi and Vidit, however, embraced the party atmosphere. Gukesh emphasized the personal nature of such choices, stating, “For me, I thought I perform best when I am away from all the partying. Arjun and Vidit, maybe it helped them perform better. So I guess you just do what works for you.”
India’s double gold victory underscores the nation’s rising dominance in the chess world, with its young stars proving their mettle on the international stage.
