**Budapest, Hungary:** India has created history by securing double gold medals at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest. Both the men’s and women’s teams clinched the top spot, marking a landmark achievement for Indian chess.
The men’s team, led by captain Srinath Narayanan, defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5 in the final round. D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi all secured victories, while Vidit Gujrathi played a draw against Matej Sebenik.
The women’s team, captained by Bhakti Kulkarni, triumphed over Azerbaijan with the same score of 3.5-0.5. D Harika, Divya Deshmukh and Vantika Agrawal were victorious, while R Vaishali drew with Ulviyya Fataliyeva. This victory was confirmed after Kazakhstan, who were tied with India on points, were held to a 2-2 draw against the United States.
The historic victory has been met with jubilant celebrations from fans, well-wishers and prominent figures in the chess world. Legendary Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, hailed the teams’ performance as “sensational,” while Sports Minister Anurag Thakur lauded the achievements as a “golden era” for Indian chess.
Cricket legend Dinesh Karthik and commentator Harsha Bhogle also joined the chorus of congratulations, highlighting the “incredible performance” of the Indian team.
