Mon Sep 23 07:10:52 UTC 2024: ## Marxist Leader Dissanayake Takes Oath as Sri Lanka’s New President
Colombo, Sri Lanka – Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a Marxist-leaning politician, has been sworn in as Sri Lanka’s new president, succeeding Ranil Wickremesinghe. Dissanayake, the leader of the People’s Liberation Front (JVP) party, secured victory in Saturday’s election with 42.31% of the vote, promising to combat corruption and clean up the country’s political landscape.
Dissanayake, known for his long-standing activism and involvement with the JVP, acknowledged the complex challenges facing Sri Lanka, particularly in the aftermath of the 2022 economic collapse and subsequent political turmoil. He vowed to work diligently to fulfill the hopes of the people and regain their trust in political leaders.
“I will do my best to fully restore the people’s confidence in politicians,” Dissanayake stated after taking his oath. He emphasized that while he has vast experience, he is not a magician, and will seek the best advice to navigate the country’s challenges.
The election comes on the heels of mass protests that forced former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from office amidst the economic crisis. While the situation has stabilized with the support of the International Monetary Fund, austerity measures have inflicted hardship on many Sri Lankans, leading to voter dissatisfaction.
Dissanayake, a former student leader who survived government-backed death squads during the JVP’s past rebellions, has since softened his political stances, advocating for an open economy and acknowledging the potential benefits of privatization. His victory marks a significant shift in Sri Lankan politics, with his Marxist background raising questions about his approach to tackling the country’s economic woes.
